Samba Roots /// New CD Release

A long time in the making, Sambazon has finally released its debut compilation CD, Samba Roots Volume 1, a collection of the best new Brazilian artists like Seu Jorge, Céu, Marcelo D2 and Curumin. Each artist shares their unique style from samba to reggae, hip hop to bossa nova. This compilation embodies the spirit of unity with a common goal – a mission to create lasting positive change in the Amazon Rainforest and beyond. All profits from Samba Roots sales go directly to the Sustainable Amazon Partnership. So join our movement to preserve one of the world’s oldest natural resources while embracing it’s new voice.

Fair Trade /// October is Fair Trade Month

October is officially Fair Trade month! And while Sambazon has practiced Fair Trade practices since it’s inception in 2000, earlier this year we finally became the first and only source of certified Fair Trade Açaí (EcoCert). One of our founders, Travis Baumgardner, wrote a quick summary of what this means and how we’re practicing market driven sustainability through fair wages and high social and environmental standards. So check it out on the Sambazon Blog!

EVENT /// Chicago Marathon and Runners World

Recently, we’ve been working with Runner’s World Magazine through advertising, editorial and events, to introduce organic açaí to the endurance running communities. This month, we were fortunate enough to be invited by Runner’s World to participate at the Chicago Marathon Expo with them. As one of the largest races in the country, the Chicago Marathon had an incredible turnout of healthy active people, all who seemed sincerely interested in what açaí, and the powerful combination of antioxidants, omegas fiber and protein, could do for their training diets. For a bit more detail on the event, our East Events Manager Pamela Kotsaftis has posted some photos and more on the Sambazon Blog.

ATHLETE PROFILE /// Rob Machado

Surf legend and Sambazon Ambassador Rob Machado has been a huge supporter of Sambazon and açaí since the early days. These days, Rob has focused his pursuits on travel, exploration and surfing epic waves… which leads us to Drifter – a Taylor Steele film that follows Rob on his soulsearching journeys through the Indonesian islands. At the world premiere of the movie in Bali, Indonesia, at the Ombak International Surf Film Festival earlier this fall, it was chosen Best Film. And the Jakarta Post enlighted us further: "Capturing the journey of the surfer through a different land, culture and waves, The Drifter is a visual metaphor for a free spirit's conscious abandonment of the worldly traps of modern life as he searches for the inner freedom and spiritual joy offered by a life of renunciation."

PURPLE SMILE /// Del Mar Siblings

CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE /// Surfer’s for Autism

From the West to the East coasts, and anywhere there are waves, we’ve seen community organizations spring up that teach children with autism how to surf. From Surfer's Healing to Surfer's for Autism this movement to enrich the lives of children with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing is a fun and rewarding experience.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH /// Ken Bates

Ken Bates

Ken is our Director of Logistics, which means he helps manage the Transportation, Warehousing, Sales Fulfillment and Inventory Management / Supply Chain functions within the Operations Group. He’s part of the glue that makes all of our functions run. And luckily for us, he’s completely a Sambahead. “I like making bowls using Fusion in the morning, diet energy in the afternoon and sorbet at night,” Ken tells us. “Trinity and Rio are my favorite juices and I drink them all the time.”

“Hands down, my favorite thing about working at Sambazon is the people – it truly is an amazing group. While researching Sambazon, prior to deciding that I wanted to work here, I read all of the issues of Zona Sul. After reading ALL of the “Employee Of the Month” segments along with the Mission Statement and the “Triple Bottom-Line” concept; I knew I absolutely wanted to come to work here and haven’t regretted that decision one iota.”

Outside of work, Ken’s favorite things have to do with the sand and sea, spending time with friends and family, especially his three, almost grown, children, and playing tennis (although he admits he’s not very good at it… but who really is anyways?)

Thanks Ken, great to have you on the team
