SAMBAZON: Reducing Our Packaging Footprint
SAMBAZON is a triple-bottom-line company that cares about the people we work with, the planet we live on, and the prosperity of everyone involved. We are proud to doour part to reduce our footprint on the environment and encourage others to do the same! And since our Açaí is made sustainably with CertifiedFair Trade, Organic, and wild-harvested ingredients, we figured our packaging should be too. SAMBAZON is committed to working towards 100% plant-based or post consumer recycled packaging -- we have a dedicated team and invested resources to test new materials and technologies that will eliminate the need to rely on plastic while protecting the quality of the food all at once. We’re excited to highlight some of our product packaging facts with you between the packaging classifications of single use, recyclable, post consumer recycled, and plant-based!
SAMBAZON Ready to Eat Açaí Bowls, or RTE Bowls, are made from compostable materials and 100% plant fiber from recycled paper! Everything about the bowl’s packaging from the actual bowl, to the film and adhesive, are all 100% plant-based! Even the sleeve is FSC Certified to ensure that it comes from responsibly managed forests that provide social, environmental, and economic benefits. We have tested how the bowl biodegrades in a composting bin at the Ecology Center and within 60 days the whole packaging was practically gone! We are so proud of the hard work and effort that went into testing and developing this packaging and we hope to inspire better eco-packaging solutions throughout the industry.
In an effort to reduce plastic waste and our impact on the environment, SAMBAZON made the switch to a new, more sustainable paper packaging for our Sorbet pints this year. By switching to paper packaging, we are able to reduce plastic by approximately 90% compared to our previous plastic pint! We've also updated our recipe to make our Açaí Sorbet even easier to scoop and enjoy, but with the same great flavor you all know and love. Recycling will vary across regions and cities, so we recommend checking with your local facility to see which materials are accepted for their curbside program.
SAMBAZON uses the highest available content of recycled aluminum for our Amazon Energy cans. Aluminum is lightweight and is one of the most easily recyclable materials available! Earlier this year, we donated the equivalent of 93,000 Amazon Energy cans to Ryan’s Recycling to help reach a goal of 1,000,000 cans recycled! Proceeds from the recycling went to support the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. We are so thrilled and can’t wait to continue supporting sustainability initiatives like this.
The paper we source for our Açaí Bites Boxes are FSC Certified, harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable! We use a 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and 5% pre-consumer recycled content. The inks used are also VOC-free meaning that they are free of the volatile organic compounds that can contain a variety of chemicals emitted as gases.
SAMBAZON is currently testing and transitioning to a 100% recycled plastic (rPET) bottle! By moving to an rPET bottle, we will be diverting tons of plastic from landfill. The bottles are also recyclable after use! To make recycling easier, we’ll be including an easy-peel, tear off label. We will make the switch to rPET bottles this spring.
The Açaí bowl cups we use at our café and mobile kitchen are made of an environmentally friendly plant-based material called Ingeo PLA, manufactured by WorldCentric! They may look like plastic and perform like plastic, but they're actually made from plants (like corn) instead of petrochemicals from fossil fuels. World Centric’s business model addresses a real need in decreasing traditional plastic production and the waste it creates, which is the type of company Sambazon wants to support. We couldn’t be more proud to serve you our delicious and nutritious Açaí in World Centric’s Ingeo PLA bowls! The next time you visit our cafés or mobile kitchen, remember the intention behind our decision to serve our products in bowls made from renewable resources.
While we are proud of the progress we have made thus far, we do realize that we need to do our part and continue to improve and reduce our impact on plastic pollution. In addition to our dedicated team and invested resources, we are members of the One Step Closer Packaging Collaborative. Together, we have a goal to remove petroleum based plastic films, like our Frozen Packets packaging, from landfills, oceans, and our planet as a whole. We are constantly testing new sustainable solutions and hope to inspire better eco-packaging solutions to change the face of the industry!
